Summary
Max Lydic was an average boy growing up in a small North Western Pennsylvania town during the early 1950's. Baseball, hotdogs,apple pie, and Chevrolets were a part of his youthful years. As a youngster Max was like every other boy in his neighbourhood, who was taught to listen and learn from his parents. These were good things, at least that is what Max thought as he started trying everything his bigger brother was doing when in the privacy of their bedroom. Max thinks it must be okay to try the things that seemed innocent as a young boy, after all, even his father performed these acts during the early hours of he mornng as Max watched his father from the corner of his bedroom at least three or four times a week. What Max believed, in his mind, was just an innocent act of learning how to become a man, soon became much bigger problems that he would never overcome, even into his adult years. Max was totally enveloped with what he seen during those quiet evenings inside his fathers bedroom that he soon would be performing these shamefull acts, two and even three times a day. What Max didn't realize as a young boy was everything he learned during his youthful years would stay with him for a long time, so long, it would become an addiction. Like smoking, or drinking, it became so overwhelming to him, consuming his every thought and finding himself not being able to control the desires, and eventually added other activities to make the fantasies and desires much more rewarding in his mind. Because of this uncontrollable disorder it eventually leads to ending his marriage of more than 30 years, but worse than that, it ultimately tears apart the relationships he had so dearly cherished with his own children. Max finally realizes he is not normal. Follow Max through his experiences as a young boy learning to become a man at an early age, into his adult years as he becomes totally obsessed with fantasies that it overwhelms him and becomes his every thought. This continues day and night until he finally comes to the realization he is dealing with a serious obsessive disorder that he cannot control anymore. Max reaches out to others for help, including his brother Jay, and along the way discovers another part of his life that he expected all along, but was kept a secret until he becomes the last one living in his family. Even today, Max still struggles with this disorder. Seventeen Inches is a novel that is a must read for all fathers, husbands, mothers and wives. An even more must read for woman who are dealing with trying to understand how men try to cope with the beauty of other woman around them and what must be happening inside their minds to create their own desires when they look at other woman. Seventeen Inches will probably make you laugh, cry, and feel disgusted all at the same time.
