I am in the process of writing a disaster response manual for a community volunteer disaster response team. I have an MPH in disaster epidemiology and preparedness and am a member of the Oklahoma Medical Reserve Corps. I have also participated in many church sponsored missions to aid populations that were victims of either a natural disaster or a man-made catastrophic event. It was in my participation to these church related responses that I discovered the need to train the typical church volunteer in the skills needed to appropriately support the first responders and give aid to the victims without increasing the danger exposure to the responder, the victim, or the volunteer.
